Course Overview
The Introduction to Analytic Wargaming Course (IAWC) introduces the use of wargaming in an analytic context. This course is designed to provide participants with a foundational understanding in the use of wargaming for operations analysis, expose different types of wargames, and provide the skills necessary to participate confidently in commonly used analytic wargames, specifically matrix and seminar style wargames.
At the end of the course, students will have the practical skills needed to participate in matrix and seminar style wargames.
Learning Objectives
This course will introduce participants to the various types of wargames used in operations analysis. Participants will:
• Understand the history of wargaming in operations analysis;
• Understand the fundamentals of wargame design;
• Understand the use of analytic wargaming within the Operations Analysis Continuum;
• Understand the different types of wargames used in operations analysis; and
• Develop a practical understanding of how to participate in a Matrix and Seminar style wargame.

Phil Arms, IAWC Facilitator
With over 35 years of military experience, Phil brings a deep understanding of the application of operations analysis to support military force design and operational planning.
Phil is a graduated of the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) and has enjoyed an extensive career in Air Force as an operational and Test Pilot. He has extensive experience in the design, facilitation and reporting of major ADF and allied wargames haveing been active in this field since 2013. His final role within Defence was to lead the ADF’s Joint Experimentation Directorate culminating in support to the Defence Strategic Review.
More recently, Phil was employed within Systems Planning and Analysis (SPA) Australia where he led teams conducting analytic modelling for Defence clients.
Phil brings a unique blend on analytic expertise with operational experience.
Brent Hughes, IAWC Facilitator
Brent is a retired Australian Army officer with 23 years of service, with deep expertise in combat leadership, operational planning and real-world amphibious operations.
His wargaming and futures-focused expertise was shaped by a secondment to the US Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory where he planned live force experimentation, followed by leadership of the Australian Army’s Operational Analysis team.
Brent has over 10 years’ experience in delivering high impact wargaming and strategic planning events
